Simple and Easy DIY Tree Branch Decor Ideas for Fall

Fall is in the air, and it’s the time of year when we cozy up our homes with some seasonal decor. One of the easiest and most affordable ways to add a touch of autumn to your space is with these DIY tree branch decor ideas. 

Take a walk outdoors, gather some fallen tree branches, and discover simple and stylish projects that you can try at home.

Welcome to this month’s Handcrafted Society with the theme of…foraged materials!

Confession: I was in a bit of a creative rut when it came to coming up with a foraged idea.

My friend Wendy from WM Design House suggested that I just go for a walk…and don’t forget the scissors!

So, I took my trusty ddog, Bentley, for a stroll, hoping to stumble upon some inspiration. Alas, all we discovered were a few branches. But they had interesting shapes, so I grabbed them!

Next, we hopped into the car and ventured to the outskirts of town. I started to take notice of natural elements that I usually ignore. 

As luck would have it, we stumbled upon a picturesque scene of sunflowers growing wild alongside the road. It was as if nature itself had painted a Van Gogh masterpiece!

My mind began to race. Branches and sunflowers… Hmm, that could be something.

I started brainstorming ideas for a project that would combine these two natural elements. Then it struck me – a “living chandelier” for my front porch! I could use the branches themselves as the frame and suspend the sunflowers from them. It would be a unique and eye-catching centerpiece that would add a touch of whimsy to my home.

I didn’t really have plan but I couldn’t wait to get started on my project. So with a little experimentation, this is how I turned natural branches into my “living chandelier!”

A Foraged Supply List

​Unless you are surrounded by desert, you probably have access to branches. 

Large branches, smaller branches…either or both will work!

After that, it is pretty much what you can find in your area. Take a walk or hop in the car…and watch the world with different eyes. You will be amazed at what you will find.

​for my project, I used sunflowers, grasses, and a pretty yellow flower whose name I do not know. I just know she is pretty!

Once you find your foraged materials, here are some supplies found at craft stores that will be helpful in making your living chandelier.

• Garden scissors or snippers
• Hacksaw
• Jute twine
• Fishing line
• Hot glue gun and glue sticks
• S hooks

A Tree Limb Chandelier

The three branches that I founded were very different sizes from each other. So the first thing I needed to do was check the size of the space where they would hang…the front porch.

Most of the time, this space is where the porch swing hangs and where we hang out on cool mornings and late evenings. For a change of pace, removing the porch swing would give ample space for the branches and allow for a different type of seating.  By measuring the depth of the porch and the distnce between the ceiling hooks, I had a general idea how wide my decorative branches could be.

About 30 seconds with the hack saw was all I needed to cut the branch down to size.

My beautiful branches (yes, I was already thinking of them as beautiful!) were also very twisty and curvy. I laid them out on the flat surface of the kitchen island and tried creative ways to entangle the branches with each other.

Once I found an “entanglement” that worked, I hot glued branch points of contact together and then reinforced the connection with jute twine. It’s amazing how strong a little glue and twine can be!

​This is where the fishing line comes into play. Because fishing line is the perfect way to hang the branches from the ceiling to create a floating effect.

By simply hanging the fishing line from the S hooks in the ceiling, my new hanging chandelier is the new focal point opportunity on the porch.

I could leave it this way for a minimalist look, but I wanted to showcase all of the gorgeous sunflowers that I picked up!

​Adding a Touch of Nature

​This could not have been easier!

Because of the twists and turns in the connected branches, there were all sorts of nooks and crannies where I was able to tuck my fresh cut sunflowers. 

Draping the flowers horizontally along the lines of the large branch gave the arrangement structure but still allowed the small branches to support smaller blooms.

There were only two spots where I used a little jute twine to secure the flowers in place.

To keep the blooms fresher longer, you can place floral water tubes on the bottom of the stems. They are a little harder to disguise in the arrangement but not impossible!

Now there is a perfect little seating area on the front porch with a beautiful branch chandelier hanging overhead. 

I can’t wait to change out flowers seasonally.  Just imagine…

• Faux cherry blossoms in early spring
• White string lights in the cold winter months
• The possibilities are endless!
• Hanging mason jars for a rustic look

More Tree Branch Decor Ideas

Perhaps one of the easiest ways to decorate with greenery branches is to simply cut a bunch and stick them in a glass vase. 

Vase filler with the ultimate natural feel!

Our leaves are not turning yet so this vase is filled with fresh greens from the backyard. Give me a few weeks and I can fill it with branches full of red, yellow, and orange leaves!

A single fall leaf can have so much impact! 

Just a couple of colorful leaves in a small vase will give any home decor loads of autumn vibes!

Birch branches or logs are a simple way to add rustic charm during the fall and winter months.

• Place some birch logs in a dough bowl on a fireplace mantel…
• Arrange them amid fall pumpkins and florals…
• Or stack them vertically in grand style in your fireplace!

Wickedly Haunted Tree Branches

Once I discovered how versatile fallen tree branches could be, I couldn’t stop!

Now when I see beautiful trees, I’m looking for fallen branches underneath it!

​With one can of black spray paint, some string lights, and some spooky faux bats, you can create this Batty Bat Branches Halloween Centerpiece!
