Luxe for Less

If you’re anything like me, you love a little “luxe” in your life.

I can walk into any store and immediately gravitate toward the most bougey and expensive item there!

But I also love finding creative ways to upcycle everyday items and create my own version of “luxe.”

I saw a crackle glass vase in a NYC shop that has been stuck in my head for about 6 months. I didn’t want to pay the sticker price so decided to make a similar version for myself.

There’s something so satisfying about turning a basic vase into a show-stopping piece that looks like it belongs in a high-end boutique.

Why Create Your Own Crackle Glass Look?

Crackle glass is so beautiful!

The shimmer, the texture, and the light-catching crackle effect create a luxe look without the hefty price tag.

The best way to add personality to your home is through pieces that feel unique and personal. This crackle technique allows you to take items you probably already have—like a basic vase, used candle jars, or even a small baking dish—and give them new life.

The cool thing is…there is now actual glass crack needed!

What You’ll Need

  • Glass vase or container (any basic florist vase will do!)
  • Grey crayon
  • White crayon
  • Silver glitter glue
  • Small paintbrush
  • Clear, non-yellowing spray sealer

Step-by-Step Instructions for How to Make a Crackle Glass Effect

If you know how to color with a crayon, you’ve got this!

Start by Drawing Straight Lines
Take a grey crayon and start to draw straight lines about an inch apart on the outside of the vase. Use medium pressure, drawing from top to bottom.

Don’t worry if the lines aren’t perfect—they’re not supposed to be! Also, draw lines on the inside lip at the top of the vase and on the vase’s bottom. The lines will be faint but visible.

Add Overlapping Arches
Once the straight lines are complete, use the same grey crayon to draw overlapping arches across the bottom of the vase. Work your way up the sides, continuing to overlap the arches. Make sure to cover the entire vase, including the bottom and the inside lip at the top.

Repeat with a White Crayon
Now repeat the process using a white crayon. Draw straight lines first, then add overlapping arches. As you work, you’ll notice the crayon markings become easier to see. Continue until the entire vase is covered.

Add Random Lines for Drama
For the next layer of texture, draw more intentional lines with both crayons, adding offshoot lines and even curvy, wavy designs.

Go as random or as intricate as you like—this is your chance to scribble!

Apply Glitter Glue
Load a small paintbrush with silver glitter glue and apply it to the vases using a cross-hatch brushstroke. The glitter glue will define the crayon lines, enhancing the crackle paint effect and giving the appearance of mercury glass.

Don’t forget to paint the glitter glue onto the inside lip and bottom of the vases.

Seal the Deal
Let the glitter glue dry for a couple of hours. Once dry, spray the vases with a clear, non-yellowing sealer to lock in the design. Allow the sealer to dry completely.

Styling Your Crackle Glass Vase

Once your vases are dry, the fun begins! Here are some of my favorite ways to style them:

Let’s start with the obvious…fill your vase with flowers!

Real or faux, it doesn’t matter! There is nothing like vibrant blooms to create a simple arrangement in your vase.

Add a touch of nature with greenery. Place a live or faux green plant inside for a fresh, natural vibe.

Crop a pillar candle into the center of your crackle glass vase and watch the cozy flame dance against the crackle glass effect.

Another idea is to fill the vase with water and add a floating candle for an elegant touch.

Here are a few more ideas:

  • Fill the vase with colored glass stones or clear marbles for texture.
  • Use the vases to hold small pieces of holiday decor, like pinecones or ornaments.
  • Your crackle glass finish will come alive in the evening with the warm glow of fairy twinkle lights!
