Karaoke Party Time!

After years of teaching students the intricacies of vocal technique and performance, I’ve decided it’s time to turn the tables (literally) and host my own karaoke party.

I’m ready to trade in the classroom for a stage, the music stand for a microphone, and the attentive gaze of students for the cheering applause of friends and family.

And this is just any karaoke night…this is competitive karaoke! Because we love to make a game out of everything!

Setting the Stage for Karaoke Night

First things first…send out invitations!

To get your guests excited about the party, send out invitations with a fun and festive design. You can send physical invitations or post invitations on social media.

Be sure to include details like the date, time, location, dress code, and a brief description of the event.

Consider adding a QR code that links to your karaoke playlist so guests can get familiar with the songs beforehand.

Tabletop Singing

To create a truly memorable atmosphere, I decided to set up my tablescape on top of my baby grand piano.

It’s a bold move, I know, but I love the idea of a piano bar and I think it adds a touch of elegance and nostalgia to the party.

And I always love to decorate around or on my piano.

Don’t worry…I covered the piano with a black and white abstract tablecloth so the piano is protected!

The karaoke machine’s twirling lights literally dance on the ceiling above the piano! (Take a guess at how many photos I took to capture this colorful swirl of light! Ok, I’ll tell you…23!)

Surrounding the piano with bar stools creates an intimate and inviting karaoke bar space for guests to enjoy their food and drinks while soaking up the musical vibes.

Because this is a BABY grand piano (think of the possible buffet with a full grand!), space is somewhat limited. So, I took the “sing and scatter” approach!

I pulled some of my favorite album jackets and old, scratched records and scattered them on the top of the piano tablescape, fireplace mantel, and throughout the room.

This is a great idea for using record albums that are scratched, broken, or warped. Check out your local thrift store and see what you find!

Feeding a Crowd

Since a karaoke party is a very casual event, I set out stacks of plates, forks, and napkins in a buffet style. Guests can hang out by the piano to nibble and nosh or easily move throughout the room with snacks.

Plates in bright multi colors reflect the fun lights on the karaoke machine!

I  used tiered trays, platters, and trays to display a variety of finger foods and drinks.

Think charcuterie boards, cheese platters, veggie sticks, fresh fruitt, and a selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Don’t forget to keep plenty of plates, napkins, and utensils to replenish the table for your guests’ convenience.

Karaoke Party Food and Drink Ideas

A great karaoke party calls for great food!

And a perfect way to get people in the mood for singing is to give all of the appetizers and drinks a fun name based on a song title.

Forks are available if guests want them.

But it more fun to eat with your fingers!

In general, serve finger foods that are easy to eat while singing. Consider offering a variety of options, such as:

  • Appetizers: Cheese platters, charcuterie boards, veggie sticks, fruit skewers
  • Main courses: Mini sliders, tacos, pizza bites
  • Desserts: Cupcakes, cookies, brownies, fruit salad

When it comes to drinks, offer a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic options. Consider creating a signature cocktail to add a special touch to the party.

Signature Cocktail Ideas

  • Karaoke Queen: Vodka, cranberry juice, lemon juice, and a splash of grenadine
  • Rock Star: Tequila, lime juice, ginger beer, and a splash of simple syrup
  • Pop Diva: Gin, cucumber, elderflower liqueur, and soda water

All the World is a Stage

For a special occasion like this, a stage is needed

Having no actual stage in our home (because who does?), I created one. Or at least cleared a space for one!

Since the fireplace is the main focus of our living room, this spot is center stage for the singing!

Whatever area you use for a staging area for your guests to perform, create a festive and lively atmosphere, and decorate your space with colorful lights, record albums, balloons, or disco balls.

It’s a good idea to make sure the area is well-lit and has enough space for performers to move around comfortably.

Also very important is to play background music between songs to keep the energy up. You could even set up a photo booth area with props and a fun backdrop for guests to capture memories.

Choosing the Perfect Karaoke Playlist

One of the most important aspects of a successful karaoke party is the list of karaoke songs!

Variety is key!

Some people will want to belt out power ballads and others may want to showcase their dance moves while singing an uptempo song. If you have a wide variety of different vocal tracks, party guests will feel more comfortable jumping up to sing their favorite song.

To ensure that everyone has a chance to shine on their favorite songs, I recommend creating a playlist that includes a variety of genres and eras. Here are a few suggestions:

  • 30s and 40s Classics: “My Way” (Frank Sinatra), “New York, New York” (Frank Sinatra), “Fly Me to the Moon” (Frank Sinatra), “Over the Rainbow” (Judy Garland), “Moon River” (Audrey Hepburn)
  • Broadway Musicals: “Dancing Queen” (Mamma Mia), “Bohemian Rhapsody” (Queen), “I Will Always Love You” (Whitney Houston), “The Sound of Music” (The Sound of Music)
  • Current Pop Music: “Shake It Off” (Taylor Swift) “Shape of You” (Ed Sheeran), “Sweet Caroline” (Neil Diamond)”Bad Guy” (Billie Eilish), “Shallow” (Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper), “Dynamite” (BTS)

You can curate your own song list or you can go online and explore all of the karaoke subscription services that are available.

Warming Up the Crowd

Some people jump into showcasing their vocal prowess without skipping a beat.

Others may feel like running for the hills!

To help your guests feel more comfortable singing, start the party with a few easy and upbeat songs. Encourage everyone to sing along, even if they’re not planning on performing solo.

You can also play some fun board games, music paper games, or a game of charades to get people loosened up.

Karaoke Tech

There are several options for karaoke equipment. You can purchase a dedicated karaoke machine, use karaoke software on your computer, or even use a laptop with a microphone and speakers.

If you’re not sure which option is best for you, consider the following factors:

  • Budget: Karaoke machines can range from affordable to high-end. Something with built-in speakers will be the easiest to set up. However, you can also set up your song lists with a laptop and some online software.
  • Features: Look for a system with features like song search, scoring, echo effects, and the ability to connect to external speakers.
  • Ease of use: Most important (at least in my book!) choose a system that is easy to set up and operate.

Fun Karaoke Games

To keep your guests entertained between songs, consider incorporating some fun karaoke theme games and activities. Or make the games the main event of the karaoke singing!

Here are a few ideas:

  • Name that tune: Play short clips of popular songs and see who can guess the title and artist.
  • Lip sync battle: Have guests compete to see who can best lip sync to a popular song. The audience votes on the winner!
  • Karaoke duet: Encourage guests to sing duets with their friends or family members.
  • Group sing-along: Take requests from your group and have a great time singing as a group!

Of course, music teacher that I am, a good old-fashioned sing-a-long is always a good idea!

Hosting a karaoke party is a great way to have fun with friends and family. And honestly, there is not any singular way to host the perfect karaoke party.

But by following these tips and tricks, you can create unforgettable memories for all of your music-loving friends.

So grab your microphone, put on your favorite tunes, and get ready to sing your heart out at your next karaoke party!

Cheers!
