Chelsea Flea Market Manhattan: Unique Finds & How I Styled My Treasures

Thrifting in NYC

If your children have to live far away from you, it’s nice when they choose an interesting place.

How about New York City?

One of my daughters lives in NYC and any trip there is full of adventures! During my last visit, we went to the Kips Bay Decorator Showcase. Amazing!

I was visiting her for a few days when I received an amazing invitation to join Rachel from The Antiqued Journey and MaryJo from Master”Pieces” of My Life in their monthly thrifting blog post.

​With much excitement, I said “yes!”, turned to my daughter and said, “We’re going to the Chelsea Flea!”

She had taken me to the Chelsea Market at Christmastime but we had never been to the Chelsea Flea. So she was also a first-time visitor. Thank you to Rachel and MaryJo for inviting me to join you this month and giving me a reason to discover a new flea market!

What is the Chelsea Flea?

Chelsea Flea is a classic NYC gem—a lively outdoor market in Manhattan filled with unique antiques, vintage finds, and quirky collectibles. 

Open year-round on weekends, it’s like a treasure hunt where you can browse everything from mid-century furniture and vintage jewelry to unexpected odds and ends. 

The vibe is laid-back, with a diverse array of vendors and local artists who know their stuff and are always up for a good chat. Whether you’re a serious collector or just in the mood to browse, Chelsea Flea is a fun stop for uncovering pieces with history and character.

You’ll find a little bit of everything! There is vintage clothing, antique furniture, mid-century decor, unique art, and loads of fun collectibles you didn’t even know you needed. 

I came across vinyl records, antique silver, old coins, rare books, quirky decorative arts, one-of-a-kind jewelry, and high-quality antiques. 

There were countless items I would have snapped up. But I was limited by an already packed suitcase, airline regulations (No antique silver serrated cake knife allowed!), and budget. 

But even for the budget-conscious shopper with no suitcase space, it’s a treasure hunt with something for everyone!

What I Bought at the Chelsea Flea and How I Styled It

After a stop at my favorite bakery (the perfect place for coffee and pastry), we headed toward Union Square and the Chelsea Flea.

Coffee Set

​This coffee carafe, sugar bowl, and coffee mugs caught the eyes of both of us.

These pottery pieces have the most beautiful patina and texture. And the shape of the coffee carafe is so unusual. 

​The booth vendor did not know its exact origin. But we know that the set was handmade because of “Eugenia’s” signature on the bottom of the saucers. 

​We both loved it. But it really suits my daughter’s neutral minimalist style. 

My daughter wasn’t interested in actually using the set. Rather, she wanted to display it as home decor. 

Her apartment is pretty small. And table space is at a premium.

But we worked around that…

​This radiator in her apartment is non-functioning. So I took one of her wood-cutting boards from the kitchen and placed it on top. Instant table!

​The coffee pot, sugar bowl, cups, and saucers look beautiful on the “table” surrounded by faux greenery. It fits her style perfectly!

Blue and White Jacobean Trays

​My next find was these lovely blue and white snack trays. 

I would have loved to have taken the antique trunk as well but I didn’t want to mess with shipping.

​Yes, the trays are a mass-produced item that I could probably find at any of the thrift shops in Nebraska. But I loved the color and the pattern….and they fit in my suitcase!

Once home, I realized that the Jacobean pattern is very similar to one of my Sid Dickens memory blocks. 

So I simply arranged a few of them on the foyer table with a couple of white vases and a faux candle.

I also am keeping one of the trays on the edge of the table to hold keys so they are handy.

A Surprise Find

​A good flea market is going to have hidden treasures.

​Unique vintage goods that have history and character…and leave you wanting to know more!

At the same vendor booth where we found the coffee set, I happened to notice this “doll”.

It was lying beside a lovely china platter as if a child had forgotten it and left it there.

Upon closer inspection, I discovered that the head, arms, and body were carved of wood. And that the jointed arms had long sticks attached to the ends.

A quick search on my phone revealed that this is an Asian marionette rod puppet. The body is a single rod attached to the torso and the sticks are used to manipulate the arms. Most of the online information for rod puppets references Balinese or Indonesian origin.

I was almost scared to ask how much. When he said “20 bucks”, I didn’t hesitate or even try to bargain. 

She had character, and personality, and was a puppet boss babe with attitude.

(And she fit in my suitcase!)

Once home, however, I found that she was a little tricky to style. 

She can’t sit down. And, because of the rod, she can’t bend.

So, I nestled her into my pothos plant pot on a bookshelf in our living room. I have some antique books with beautiful covers in tones that match her dress.

And, because I like to do things in odd number,  I added a little teapot and cup to the top of the book stack.

​The sticks help to anchor her hands into any position I want.

I chose to give her a regal stance with her gaze toward the garden window. (Can you guess I like romanticize?)

I love her so much! Partially because she looks so elegant on my bookshelf.

And partly because she reminds me of my wonderful Chelsea Flea experience with my daughter!

NYC Outdoor Flea Markets I Want to Visit

New Yorkers have some of the best flea markets! And now that I have had a taste of a NYC flea market, I have scouted out these markets that are on my list to visit.

• Brooklyn Flea
  • Location: The DUMBO archway, under the Manhattan Bridge at 80 Pearl St, Brooklyn, NY  (Saturdays and Sundays)
  • Known for its large selection of vintage clothing, antiques, handmade items, and delicious food vendors.
• Hester Street Fair
  • Location: The Seaport at 89 South St, New York, NY 
  • This cozy market offers a mix of vintage goods, handmade jewelry and crafts, and food stalls, and frequently hosts special events like vintage pop-ups.
• Grand Bazaar NYC
  • Location: 100 W 77th St, New York, NY  (at Columbus Avenue, Upper West Side)
  • The largest flea market in NYC, this market features antiques, vintage clothes, pieces by local artisans, and a fantastic selection of food vendors. Open on Sundays.
