Oops! 10 Decorating Mistakes That I Made and Fixed
“Oops!”
“Uh oh…”
“D’oh!
Decorating mistakes…I have had my fair share.
“But it looked so good in my head!”
Can you relate?
From rearranging my childhood playhouse to updating my current house (that’s 50+ years, my friend!), I have loved decorating, creating, DIYing, painting, hammering, wallpapering, hanging, etc…
Most of the time with success.
But once in a while, there is a “clinker moment.”
It’s bound to happen.
But I don’t let it get me down…I learn from it. And now you can learn from my mistakes!
Don’t get me wrong…I love breaking the occasional decorating rule. But the mistakes in the blog post are general “learn from my mistakes” lessons that might be of help to you!
Whether it’s a floor plan mishap, a lighting faux pas, or even a missed opportunity, I’m sharing my biggest decorating lessons (and how you can avoid them) to help you create a home you truly love!
Decorating Mistake #1: Clutter Overload
Problem: Too much stuff crammed into a room makes it feel smaller, chaotic, and downright stressful. It can also make it difficult to clean and maintain the space, leading to even more frustration over time.
I blame my pack-rat tendencies.
Certain areas are my weak points…closet, home office, and craft room. These are frequently used spaces where the cutter can easily get the better of me!
Solution:
- Declutter ruthlessly—if you don’t love it or use it, it goes! (Sometimes I need loving partner to help me with this one!)
- Create designated storage spaces for everyday items to keep surfaces clear.
- Use baskets and decorative boxes to corral small items stylishly while maintaining easy access.
- Rotate seasonal decor instead of displaying everything at once.
- Adopt a “one in, one out” rule to prevent new clutter from accumulating.
Decorating Mistake #2: Hanging Curtains Too Low and Too Long
Problem: Hanging curtain rods right at the top of the window frame and using curtains that puddle too much makes the ceiling height feel lower and the room look awkward. It can also block natural light, making the space feel dim and uninviting.
For years, I hung drapes just a smidge above the window molding and let the fabric puddle on the floor.
Looking back, this reminds me of an occasional siting of jeans that hang a little low and drag on the ground!
Solution:
- A good rule: Hang the curtain rod at least 6-12 inches above the window frame to elongate the walls. Truly, you will add visual inches to your room!
- Curtains should hang just above the floor…as in “kiss the floor.” No extra fabric pooling like a bridal train (or old jeans), which can look messy.
- Extend the curtain rod beyond the window frame to let in more natural light and create a grander look.
- Choose curtain panels that are wide enough to fully cover the window when closed.
- Use curtain rings or clips for an elevated, tailored look.
Decorating Mistake #3: Not Testing Paint Colors First
Problem: Paint looks totally different under different lighting. And picking a color from a tiny swatch is a recipe for regret. Trust me…I have cans of paint in our basement to prove it.
A color that looks perfect in a store can appear too dark, too bright, or completely different in your home’s unique lighting conditions.
Solution:
- Always test paint colors on the wall and observe them throughout the day with different light sources.
- Use large swatches instead of tiny samples to get a better sense of the color. Even better, try Samplize: peel and stick paint samples in a hefty 12 x 12 inch size.
- Consider trim colors, furniture, and other elements in the rest of the room before committing.
- Paint sample sections on multiple walls to see how the color looks from different angles.
- If color makes you nervous, opt for a neutral base with accent colors that can be changed easily with decor.
Decorating Mistake #4: Not Enough Lighting
Problem: Bad lighting can make a gorgeous room feel dull and uninspiring. I can remember some evenings entertaining in our living room at dusk and feeling embarrassed that our guests were straining to see! Eek!
Also, beware of overhead lights. A single overhead light often casts harsh shadows, making a space feel flat and unwelcoming. Unless it is a lovely chandelier, turning on a single overhead light is pretty much forbidden in our house. (Who knew that one light could add 10 years to my face!)
Solution:
- Follow the rule of three: every room should have at least three light sources at different heights (overhead lighting, table lamps, and floor lamps).
- Mix task lighting, ambient lighting, and accent lighting for a balanced and inviting atmosphere.
- Avoid relying solely on overhead lighting—it creates unflattering shadows and a cold atmosphere.
- Use dimmable switches to adjust brightness for different activities and moods.
- Incorporate reflective surfaces like mirrors and glass to amplify natural light.
Decorating Mistake #5: Using Rugs That Are Too Small
Problem: A smaller rug makes a room feel disjointed and underwhelming. It can also make furniture arrangements look disconnected rather than cohesive.
I was slow to learn this one. The thrift store was eventually the beneficiary of my many small, cheap rugs
To be fair, I used to avoid purchasing large rugs for budget reasons. (You know, that raising kids thing!)
Looking back, I would have fared better by saving to buy one large rug rather than several small rugs that did not work in the space.
Solution:
- In the living room, all furniture legs should at least touch the rug for a grounded look.
- For a dining table, the rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond the edges of the table so chairs remain on the rug when pulled out.
- A large rug anchors the entire space and creates a cohesive look.
- Use a rug pad to prevent slipping and add extra cushioning underfoot.
- Layer rugs for added texture and visual interest, especially in large or open-concept spaces.
Decorating Mistake #6: Straying From My Color Palette
Problem: Introducing too many colors outside of a planned palette can make a space feel chaotic and uncoordinated.
Color is my jam!
And sometimes I am tempted to “jam” too many additional colors into my chosen color palette.
Solution:
- Choose a primary color scheme and stick to it throughout your home.
- Use neutral bases and bring in color through accessories and accents.
- Limit your color palette to 3-5 colors for consistency.
- Swatch test colors in different lighting before committing.
- Use color strategically to create a flow between rooms.
Decorating Mistake #7: Too Many Small Decor Pieces
Problem: An overload of small accessories can make a space look cluttered rather than styled.
I call it “decorating dandruff!”
You know…lots of stuff that is all the same size, too crowded together, and with no space to give them the distinction they deserve.
Solution:
- Group items in odd numbers for balance and visual interest.
- Vary the scale of accessories to create depth.
- Use trays to corral small items into a cohesive arrangement.
- Choose statement pieces rather than multiple tiny items.
- Keep surfaces from being overcrowded by leaving negative space.
Decorating Mistake #8: Not Including Natural Elements
Problem: A room without wood tones, plants, or organic textures can feel cold and lifeless.
How did I go so many years with a single plant in my home?
Once I discovered greenery, it was like my house sighed with relief!
And my white kitchen?
Oh, she gave into her cozy vibes once I added wood blinds and copper baking accessories!
Solution:
- Incorporate wood furniture, flooring, or accents to add warmth and depth.
- Use natural fiber rugs like jute or wool.
- Display fresh flowers or potted plants. (Real or quality faux…either works!)
- Introduce organic materials like moss balls, bamboo, or clay decor pieces for texture and visual interest.
- Layer in woven baskets, linen textiles, or stone elements to create a natural, cozy atmosphere.
- Balance modern decor with nature-inspired accents to soften the overall aesthetic.
Decorating Mistake #9: Not Having a Table Surface Near Every Seat
Problem: Have you ever sat down with a cup of coffee or a book, only to realize there’s nowhere to set it down?
A room without accessible table surfaces can feel impractical and unfinished. Every seat should have a nearby spot to place a drink, a book, or even a decorative accent.
Solution:
- Aim for balance – Ensure every chair or seating area has a nearby table within arm’s reach.
- Use a mix of tables – Side tables, coffee tables, cocktail tables, and even small stools can serve as functional surfaces.
- Consider scale – Tables should be appropriately sized for the furniture they accompany—too big or too small can throw off the room’s flow.
- Get creative – Try nesting tables, wall-mounted shelves, or even a stylish ottoman with a tray to maximize functionality in smaller spaces.
- Keep it clutter-free – A table’s purpose is to be useful, so avoid overcrowding it with too many decorative items.
Decorating Mistake #10: Following a Trend That Isn’t Me
Problem: Designing a space based on trends rather than personal style can lead to regret.
I am a huge fan of the Modern Farmhouse design aesthetic…in other people’s homes!
I tried it.
Truly. I did!
And every time I walked into my modern farmhouse living room, I had the intense urge to hang patterned wallpaper, add bold modern art, and throw fuschia pink pillows on the sofa!
It lasted a few weeks before I returned to my love-of-color, maximalist style.
I felt like I could breathe again!
Solution:
- Identify what colors, patterns, and styles make you feel happy.
- Use trends as inspiration rather than a strict guide.
- Mix trendy items with classic pieces that reflect your personality.
- Decorate for yourself, not for what’s popular.
- Trust your instincts and decorate in a way that feels authentic.
- You do YOU!
Bonus Decorating Mistake #11: Living Like a Renter
Problem: Designing your home based on resale concerns rather than personal preference can lead to a space that doesn’t truly reflect you.
Will this design decision affect the resale of my house?
This question rolled through my head so many times when we first moved into our house.
Twenty years later? I have learned to go with my design instincts, decorate my house in my style, and love every colorful, quirky moment!
Solution:
- This is your home, your sanctuary, your personality. Don’t be driven by “What if?”
- If a design decision is giving you resale fear, consider how you can add the essence of the design choice without a construction choice. Ex. Want a checkerboard floor? Perhaps add the pattern through a pillow, chair fabric, or wallpaper pattern.
- Take decorating risks that bring you joy—whether it’s bold wallpaper, dramatic lighting, or colorful cabinetry. (It’s all just replaceable materials, my friend!)
- Personalize your space with meaningful decor, artwork, and furniture that speak to you.
- Remember, future buyers will change things anyway—design for you first!

Great advice, Missy!
My youngest son and I were talking this morning about if we see a hairstyle that appeals to us, we have to keep in mind that doesn’t mean it would look good on us. It reminds me of mistake #10. Sometimes we can like things for other people. Clothes, home decor…my latest haircut, which is nice, just not me. Good thing it grows back out!
