A Fresh Look with a Christmas Tree Collar

Can we talk about the traditional Christmas tree skirt for a second? Sure, they’ve been the go-to for the base of the tree for years, but isn’t it time for something fresh and fun?

That’s where Christmas tree collars come in—they’re a chic upgrade for your tree’s base, giving it a polished, put-together look.

Whether you’re decking out your living room with classic holiday vibes or trying something trendy and new, a tree collar can take your decor to the next level with minimal effort.

You can find all sorts of tree collars in stores. From metal tree collars to a sturdy wooden Christmas tree collar, these Christmas decorations are great options for giving the base of your tree the perfect finishing touch.

But it is also fun an budget-friendly to create your own DIY Christmas tree decor!  Let’s dive into some festive and super easy DIY ideas you’ll love!

Lampshade Christmas Tree Collar

Transforming a lampshade into a DIY Christmas tree collar is a great alternative to a traditional tree skirt that adds a unique touch to your holiday decor. Start by flipping a large lampshade upside down to create a stable base.

To secure your tree, fill the interior of the lampshade with styrofoam, which acts as a supportive cushion. Carefully poke the bottom of the tree trunk or stand into the styrofoam to hold it in place.

This method works well for an artificial tree or a small real tree, and you can customize the look by painting or decorating the lampshade to match your holiday theme. It’s an easy way to repurpose an old item and give your tree a chic, one-of-a-kind base for the holiday season!

Woven Basket Christmas Tree Collar

I love the look of a woven tree collar and a large basket is a great way to create your own. This works especially well for a smaller-sized tree.

First, you need to find a basket. You just need a basket with plenty of room for a Christmas tree stand to fit in the center.

This white basket with black pom poms has long been one of my favorite pieces of home decor. It has held many a magazine, many a plant, and many a “whatever gets tossed into it!”

But the bottom of the basket has become worn and threadbare from constant use.

There are two options to try. You can cut out the bottom of the basket by cutting around the bottom perimeter of the basket.

My preferred method is to reinforce the bottom of the basket with strong contact paper or duct tape.

Nestle the base of a tree into the reinforced basket and enjoy the beautiful Christmas tree collar!

DIY Photo Frame Christmas Tree Collar

Did you know that you can make a beautiful collar for the base of your Christmas tree using photo frames?

Supply List

All you need are the following supplies for this simple tutorial:

  • 6-7 Photo Frames or Document Frames
  • Fabric (enough to wrap each of the frames)
  • Duct Tape (a solid color that coordinates with the fabric works best)
  • Cardboard box or cardboard sheets
  • Scissors
  • Optional: Hot Glue Gun
A stack of certificate frames and plaid fabric.

Start this project by cutting fabric to wrap all of your document frames. Wrap the frames just like you would wrap a gift. Only now you will be using duct tape to secure the fabric.

Once the frames are wrapped, line them up horizontally, short end to short end.

Take your cardboard and cut strips about 1 x 3 inches. At the joint connection of two frames, lay two cardboard strips about 4 inches from each other and secure onto the frames using duct tape. (or hot glue gun if you prefer) It helps if you push the frames together slightly to ensure a close connection and secure hold.

Repeat this process until all of the frames have been connected with the cardboard strips.

Set the connected frames on their side and bend the hinged collar into a circle. Connect the frames end together using the cardboard strip and duct tape method.
