An American in Paris
I visited France 15 years ago with my sister and three things rocked my world…
Bread, wine…
…and scarves!
I think I purchased 6 different scarves during the trip and effectively changed my entire wardrobe. My favorite scarves are the ones I bought from charming street vendors. One particular scarf was made of tiny colorful strings that were woven together in beautiful shades of blue. I felt so chic wearing it!
My sister bought one as well and, between eating bread and drinking wine, we were stylishly twinning it!
Plus, I could eat all the French bread I wanted, and the scarves still fit!
This was the beginning of my life as a scarf lover!
The Magic of Scarves
Scarves can add a touch of personality and sophistication to any outfit and are a quick and easy way to add fashion-forward style to your look. Regardless of trends that come and go, a scarf is the quintessential accessory that can enhance any outfit.
Styling a scarf on a handbag handle is a great way to add a pop of color and create a hand-free, polished look. And best of all, you can change the color and pattern of your scarf based on your outfit color!
In this blog post, I’ll show you how to tie a purse scarf in a few easy steps using a Twilly scarf. So whether you’re a fashion-forward fashionista or a casual minimalist, I’m sure you’ll find a scarf-tying technique that you love.
What is a Twilly Scarf?
Have you ever heard of a Twilly scarf? I had seen them around for years, but I didn’t really know what they were.
Well, as it turns out, Twilly scarves are a very beautiful and very versatile accessory! A twilly scarf is a narrow, skinny scarf made of silk or satin, and they’re often printed with intricate patterns or designs.
Twilly scarves were first introduced by the French luxury brand Hermès in the late 1930s. They were originally designed to be used as a way to protect the handles of Hermès bags, but they quickly became popular as a fashion accessory.
So popular that they can be found at reasonable prices and often in coordinated sets! Be sure to check out my Amazon shop for skinny scarves in all sorts of colors and patterns!
How to Tie a Twilly Purse Scarf
Any of these methods can be achieved using square scarves. However, the look will be easier to achieve and have a more luxury appearance if you use a twilly scarf.
The Bow Tie Method
We all know how to tie our shoelaces…use the same bow with some skinny scarves!
- Fold the scarf in half lengthwise.
- Place the scarf around the side of the handle of your purse, with the folded edge at the top.
- Bring the ends of the scarf together and tie a knot at the top of the handle.
- Adjust the knot to your desired tightness.
- Create a bow by crossing the ends of the scarf over each other, so that the right end is on top of the left end.
- Bring the right end up and over the left end, forming a loop.
- Bring the right end back down through the loop, creating a bow.
- Adjust this cute bow to your desired size.
The Knotted Method
- Fold the scarf in half lengthwise.
- Place the scarf around the handle of your purse, with the folded edge at the top.
- Bring the ends of the scarf together and tie a knot at the top of the handle.
- Adjust the knot to your desired tightness.
- Bring one end of the scarf up and over the other end, forming a loop.
- Bring the end that is now underneath back up through the loop, creating a knot.
- Adjust the knot to your desired size.
- Tuck the ends of the scarf under the knot.
The Wrap-Around Method
- Tie one end of the scarf in a small knot to the base of the purse handle.
- Wrap the scarf around the handle of your purse two or three times, depending on how long your scarf is. If your scarf is long enough, wrap the entire purse handle and tie the loose end in a knot on the end of the handle.
- Adjust the knot to your desired tightness.
- Tuck the ends of the scarf under the knot.
Other Ways to Style a Twilly Scarf
The beauty of these classic ties is that they are so versatile and you can style them in lots of fun ways! Take a look at some of these fun options!
Unstructured Bag: If you have a bag with little or no structure like a hobo bag or crossbody bag, tie in a simple knot on one corner of the bag.
Headband: This is a great way to add a pop of color or pattern to your outfit. You can tie the scarf around your head in a variety of ways, so get creative!
Hair tie: This is a great way to keep your hair out of your face and add a touch of style. You can tie the scarf around your hair in a simple knot, or you can get creative and tie it in a bow or a braid.
Laptop Bag: Give an ordinary laptop bag the look of a luxury handbag.
Choker: Wrap your skinny scarf several times around your neck and secure with a side knot. Don’t wrap too tightly…give yourself enough wiggle room so you can slip a few fingers in between your neck and the scarf. You will be much more comfortable!
Bracelet: This is a great way to add a touch of luxury to your outfit. You can wrap the scarf around your wrist a few times and tie it in a knot, or you can tuck the ends into your sleeve.

Nice to see I haven’t lost it fashionwise, I am 79 yrs young and have loved using scarves for years to lift my outfits. Actually used a thin black scarf with white spots on as a bow on a black handbag I used for a funeral yesturday to add that bit of style! Well done for showing everyone, as so many only use un adulterated clothes and it is missing the finishing touch!
