Christmas is a magical time. And color plays a huge part in this. Let’s dive into the magic of color, starting with tips on how to choose a palette that fits your style and enhances your holiday cheer!
How to Choose Your Christmas Color Palette
When planning your Christmas color scheme, start by considering your home’s overall style and color palette.
If your living room already features warm tones or a neutral palette, choose holiday colors that complement and enhance these existing hues for a seamless, cohesive look.
Think about the mood you want to create. Do you want your Christmas decorations to feel cozy and nostalgic, bold and vibrant, or to reflect a quiet luxury? Each color choice helps set the tone, whether you’re aiming for a classic Christmas feel or something fresh and modern.
Next, pick two or three main colors and add accent hues to bring out your personal style. This approach keeps the look balanced and lets you incorporate unique touches. You might add red accents, metallic details, or soft tones like blush pink to make your holiday decor stand out.
Don’t overlook natural elements like pine cones, branches, and fresh greenery, which bring a rustic charm and add earthy green tones that enhance the season’s warmth.
To complete your look, try layering patterns and textures. Plaids, velvet, and wood accents can make the space feel rich and inviting, adding depth and interest to your holiday decor.

Christmas Color Scheme Ideas
Traditional Red and Green
There’s a reason red and green have been classic Christmas colors for generations. This traditional Christmas color scheme creates a warm, festive, and nostalgic feel that’s perfect for the most wonderful time of the year.
This year, there is a trend toward deep, rich reds with lush, velvet textures. However, bright Christmas red never goes out of style!
Incorporating both bright reds and earthy green tones, this palette brings the essence of Christmas tradition to life.
Tips for Implementing Red and Green
- Christmas Tree Decor: Adorn your tree with red berries, traditional ornaments, and garlands in berry reds and forest green shades.
- Festive Decorations: Balance bright reds with green accents in stockings, throw pillows, and wreaths.
- Use Natural Elements: Pine cones and evergreen branches work beautifully with this palette to create a timeless, rustic holiday look.
This color combination also works well with classic Christmas decor like plaid blankets, red ribbons, and red accents around the room.
Jewel Tones
For those looking for a luxurious feel, jewel tones like emerald green, sapphire blue, and deep amethyst offer a bold and opulent holiday color scheme. Jewel tones bring a sense of elegance to your Christmas home, giving your space a rich, dramatic effect.
Jewel tones look beautiful on both green and white trees. Because of the depth of color or jewel tones, you will get a totally different look depending on the tree you use. And every look is amazing!
Tips for Adding Jewel Tones
- Ornaments and Tree Decor: Decorate your tree with rich emerald green, deep purple, and royal blue ornaments.
- Living Room Accents: Add velvet pillows, throws, and candles in jewel tones to enhance the luxurious feel.
- Metallic Touches: Mix in gold or bronze for a touch of luxury and to create a layered, sophisticated look.
A jewel-toned Christmas palette creates a beautiful backdrop that instantly elevates your Christmas holiday ambiance.
Neutral Elegance
If you lean towards a minimalist style, neutral tones like ivory, beige, and soft gray can be a wonderful way to decorate for Christmas. These natural colors are understated yet elegant, making them ideal for creating a peaceful, serene holiday environment.
Tips for Styling Neutral Christmas Decor
- Use Natural Colors: Ivory, taupe, and sage can create a harmonious, earthy green palette.
- Focus on Texture: Choose cozy textures like knit blankets, faux fur, and wood accents to add depth without overwhelming the palette.
- Subtle Greenery: Add simple greenery, like eucalyptus and pine, to bring in a bit of holiday cheer.
For a soft, refined look, this neutral Christmas palette offers a clean, calming vibe that feels both modern and timeless.
Festive Brights
Bright colors bring a playful, joyous energy to holiday decorating. Vibrant hues such as pink, teal, and yellow are perfect for creating a lively atmosphere, especially if you’re looking to shake up traditional Christmas colors.
Don’t be afraid to mix unconventional colors or patterns. I love combining blush pink with a leopard print.
Or combine deep red with a vivid pink for a bold, preppy look!
Tips for Decorating with Bright Colors
- Christmas Tree: Use multicolored ornaments and lights to create a cheerful, whimsical look.
- Tabletop Decor: Place bright-colored napkins, plates, and centerpieces on your holiday table to add a pop of festive color.
- Keep Backgrounds Neutral: Let the bright colors stand out by keeping your walls and furniture in neutral tones.
This look works particularly well if you have a white tree, as it provides a perfect backdrop for bright and bold colors.
Quiet Luxury Look
For a more understated, elegant Christmas palette, try the “quiet luxury” look. Using soft, cool tones like champagne, silver, and soft green color tones, this style is perfect for those who prefer subtle sophistication in their holiday decor.
Tips for a Quiet Luxury Look
- Go Monochromatic: Stick to one or two colors, such as soft greens and light metallics.
- Luxurious Materials: Velvet bows, satin ribbons, and crystal ornaments can add just the right amount of opulence.
- Metallic Accents: Use silver or gold accents sparingly to maintain a refined look.
The quiet luxury look is an elegant way to make your Christmas holiday decor feel high-end without being overly bold.
Classic Christmas Color Schemes
Some classic color combinations, like red and gold or silver and white, never go out of style. These classic Christmas color schemes bring a traditional yet sophisticated look to your holiday decor.
Tips for Classic Christmas Colors
- Christmas Tree: Red and gold or silver and white ornaments create a balanced, timeless look.
- Festive Accessories: Add red and gold candles, stockings, or ribbon throughout your space.
- Touch of Nostalgia: Incorporate vintage ornaments, plaid blankets, or classic wrapping paper for added charm.
These popular Christmas color schemes offer a reliable way to decorate with ease and elegance.
Winter Blues
Blues, from icy aqua to deep navy, can bring a cool, refreshing touch to Christmas decorations, perfect for creating a winter wonderland look.
How to Style Winter Blues
- Tree and Ornaments: Mix blue and silver ornaments for a frosty effect.
- Greenery: Pair blue tones with frosted or white trees to enhance the cool, wintry feel.
- Glass and Crystal Accents: Use glass vases or crystal candleholders to add shimmer to your decor.
This palette works wonderfully in a coastal or modern Christmas home.
Cozy Plaid
Plaid patterns bring an inviting, cabin-like feel to holiday decor. Whether used in red and green or more muted tones, plaid is a great way to add texture and warmth.
Tips for Decorating with Plaid
- Throws and Pillows: Incorporate plaid blankets and pillows in your living room or guest bedrooms.
- Ribbon and Bows: Use plaid ribbons on your tree, wreaths, and garlands for a cohesive look.
- Table Setting: Plaid napkins or table runners create a rustic, festive look on the dining table.
Plaid patterns add charm to your holiday setup, perfect for those who enjoy classic, cozy styles.
Still Not Sure?
If you are still not sure which Christmas color scheme to choose (there are so many options!), consider these places for inspiration!
- Find inspiration in what you already have. Sometimes that could mean a single ornament, a special family photo, a travel souvenir, or a favorite keepsake.
- Look at your holiday gift wrap! What colors and patterns have you been drawn to when wrapping packages in the past?
- Check out your pillows. The decorative pillows you use in your home are a certain give-away to colors that you love!
- Open your photo albums. Nostalgic decorating never goes out of style! Take a walk down your childhood Christmas memory lane and recreate your favorite color combos.
- Choose a special ribbon or ribbons that you really love. Pull colors from the ribbon and then use the ribbon in your Christmas decorating. It becomes the literal “thread” of your home!

Missy, I love your bright, colorful Christmas decorations! Everything is so beautiful and inspiring! I see you have a love of ball wreaths too. There is no way to say “when” when it comes to accumulating Christmas decorations! Thanks for a great blog hop! I am so grateful to be included!
All of the combinations are gorgeous! I’m just getting started this year so it was great timing for a little inspiration! I was hesitant to get everything out but now that I have I’m excited! It’s a lot of jenga boxes and rearranging to get started lol!
Like you, I have all of my Christmas totes lined up in the hallway. Little by little, I’m chipping away at them!
I have so much blue in my home, that it demands to be noticed. You have so many ideas here, I saw (in some empty cart instore shopping) that blues and turquoise are still strong in the Holiday aisles. I only purchased some ancient outdoor garlands with the same thing (even with sale price made it the same as 1988 or so) I will dig in my stashes and see what I can pull ogether this year. But, not one thing will appear until a week after Thanksgiving. Blogging or not, I guess I will just share old posts like so many are doing anyway, Sandi
Blue and turquoise is so fun at Christmas time! Snatch up those deals! Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
Thank you so much for sharing. I love this time of year because I’m invited to many homes that have Christmas decorations up and I get so much inspiration. My wife and I have a more traditional red and green theme, but I’ve been loving jewel tones to spice up my mostly beige home.
Ooh! You should try adding some jewel tones in with the red and green! Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting! Enjoy the holidays!
SO gorgeous, Missy. I love all of the pretty ideas and inspiration or Christmas decorating. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much, Jen! Have a great weekend!
Such great tips! I’m leaning to a more natural look this Christmas. Visiting from Farmhouse Friday.
I’ll bet your home is beautiful this Christmas!
