Nose in a Book

I grew up with my nose in a book every chance I got.

My mother tells stories of me buried in a book when we went to my brother’s high school wrestling matches!

(I need to recapture this ability to tune out chaos!)

Ironically, my available time and desire to read took a back seat in my adulthood to professional reading and just wanting to go to bed early!

Revisiting my love of reading after years of teaching has been a joy! And having a dedicated space for it has reignited that passion. There’s something truly comforting about having the perfect place where I can nestle into a comfortable chair, surrounded by soft pillows and warm blankets, and simply relax.

It’s my sanctuary, where I can unwind, recharge, and find solace in the captivating worlds within the pages of my favorite novels and home-decorating books.

Reading Nook Ideas for Your Bedroom

Whether a reading corner, a window seat, or just a small space beside your bed, give yourself the gift of your own reading space. And set yourself up for success with these ideas for a comfortable reading nook!

Find a Corner: Begin by scouting out the perfect cozy nook in your bedroom where you can establish your reading nook. Look for a spot that’s quiet and away from distractions, ideally near a window with plenty of natural light. Aa cozy alcove will work too!

This corner will become your personal haven, so take your time to find the perfect spot that feels just right.

Comfortable Chair: Investing in a comfy chair is essential for long hours of reading enjoyment. Choose a chair with plush cushions and supportive armrests so you can “plop” into it with ease. Consider factors like size, shape, and upholstery material when choosing a chair. Not only will it look inviting but it also will provide optimal comfort for extended reading sessions. No straight backs and itchy fabric!

Think beyond the usual chair and consider a hanging chair, a chaise lounge chair, or even an inviting pile of floor cushions!

Ottoman: For added comfort and versatility, consider including an ottoman or pouf in your reading nook setup. An ottoman serves as a footrest where you can prop up your feet while lounging in your chair. Or, it can double as a resting place for a tray of snacks or to hold your next line up of books! Choose a style that complements your chair and provides an additional layer of coziness to your reading nook.

A Comfortable Space That is Functional

Side Table: No reading nook is complete without a convenient side table to hold your essentials. Opt for a sturdy, small table positioned next to your chair where you can place your book, reading glasses, and a cup of tea or coffee.

Look for a table with drawer storage space. Or, add a smaller stool to nestle next to a larger end table. This will ensure that everything you need is within arm’s reach.

Lighting: There is nothing worse than bad lighting when you are trying to read! Set the mood with good lighting to enhance your reading experience. Choose a light that provides strong enough light so you are not squinting or straining to read.

Position your light strategically to minimize glare on your book. Make sure that the space is adequately illuminated for reading comfortably, day or night.

Create a Zone with Rugs: Define your reading nook area by adding a rug to define the area and create a cozy and inviting space. Not only will it beautify your reading area, but it will also be nice for bare feet!

Layer Textiles: Enhance the comfort and warmth of your reading chair by layering textiles. A plush throw pillow and cozy blankets…nothing is cozier!

Mix and match textures, patterns, and colors to create a visually appealing and cozy space. Incorporate soft, tactile fabrics like knits, faux fur, or velvet, for a touch of luxury and warmth that invites you to snuggle up with a good book.

Reading Room Organization

Portable Book Cart:
Keep your reading material organized and easily accessible with a portable book cart that you keep handy whenever you’re ready to dive into a new book. Choose a stylish and functional book cart with multiple tiers or compartments to hold your books, magazines, and other reading essentials. Position the cart next to your chair for easy access to your favorite books without cluttering your reading nook.

Don’t like the look of a utility cart? Cover it with wallpaper! I took a simple Ikea cart and gave it a stylish makeover with some peel-and-stick wallpaper. You can see the project HERE!

Color Code Books:
Organize your book collection by color to create a cohesive display in your reading nook. Group books together by color or shade to create a rainbow effect that adds a pop of color and visual interest to your space. This method not only makes it easier to find books but also serves as a decorative element that gives your reading nook a playful vibe.

Layer Artwork or Gallery Wall: Add personality to your reading nook by hanging artwork or creating a gallery wall. Mix and match prints, photographs, and illustrations to create a space that reflects your interests and style. Choose artwork that inspires you or evokes a sense of calm to enhance your reading experience.

Choose Literary Artwork: Take your artwork to the next level by curating wall art that has a literary theme!

Surround Yourself with Plants: Bring the outdoors in by filling your reading nook with houseplants to create a back to nature atmosphere. Choose low-maintenance plants like succulents, pothos, or snake plants that thrive indoors and require minimal care. Faux plants are also great options for adding a touch of nature to your cozy spot.  Place potted plants on shelves, windowsills, or side tables to add a touch of greenery and life to your reading nook.

Book Nook Finishing Touches

Candles: Create a cozy and inviting atmosphere in your cozy corner with the warm glow and soothing fragrance of candles. Choose scented candles in calming scents like lavender or vanilla to promote relaxation and enhance your reading experience.

Place candles on your side table or shelves to add ambiance and create a sense of tranquility in your reading nook. Or, place your candle on top of beautiful vintage books!

Reading Glasses Caddy: I am never very far away from my readers! In fact, I like to have a bowl of them near my cozy little reading nook.

Keep your reading glasses organized and within easy reach in a stylish caddy placed on your side table. Choose a container that holds your glasses and other small essentials like bookmarks or pens. Having a designated spot for your reading glasses allows you to always have your readers handy!

Decorate with Books: What better way to decorate your bedroom corner than with books!

Play with different book arrangements…vertical, horizontal, or a little of both. Display with the book jackets or with the jackets removed and the spines facing the opposite direction. Or, change out the book jackets completely by wrapping your books with attractive wallpaper.

Want some music? Some people prefer to read in silence. Others like to have music playing in the background while reading. I think music is the perfect addition to the perfect reading nook.

You probably have a reading list? How about a playlist of some great music for when you are enjoying a good read!

  1. Oh, I just love this post! So many wonderful ideas for cozy reading nooks! I was the same as you, growing up. Nose always in a book, and I would often be reading several at the same time. I would even bring my book to the dinner table. (I was the baby, so my mom was a little soft on me about that!) I need to make a cozy nook like these. Great post!

  2. Your book nook looks very inviting. A great place to read and relax!
Thank you for sharing at Gma’sPhoto | ge•ner•ic Linkup Party . Looking forward to seeing you next Friday!
    Take care and best wishes.

  3. Missy, I love all of the ideas you have for creating cozy reading nooks! Our entire family loves to read and in each of our bedrooms, we all had layers of books, and each of our children had bookshelves in their bedrooms when they were young. My daughter and her roommate have decorated their living room with bookcases. 😉 We have a triple bookcase in our living room overflowing with books and magazines ~ a carryover from my family’s metal bookcases which my parents had full of science fiction paperbacks, bird books, National Geographic magazines and more.

A great way to live! Anyway, I was happy to feature your post at this week’s Share Your Style #422 for you. I hope you are enjoying a wonderful weekend.

    Enjoy your wonderful retreat,
    Barb 🙂
