I grew up taking piano lessons.
Most of the time I loved it. In fact, I eventually became a music teacher.
But, like most kids, there were times when I did not want to practice.
I would rather hang out with my friends, chill out in my room, or watch Brady Bunch reruns. (I’m dating myself!)
But when I did sit down in my practice space, I was never alone.
Above the family piano was a beautiful abstract painting of a woman.
There was no reference at all to music in the painting. But the brighter colors of the image brought the white walls to life and were lovely to look at while practicing my scales.
She was hanging center stage above the piano and seemed to gently take command of the rest of the room. She made my piano practice time a whole lot more lovely and interesting.
I think of her often when I decorate around the piano that I now own. She is a reminder that home decor ideas in a music area are as important as decorating the entire room.
Let’s explore some decorative ideas for your piano or music space!

Where is the Best Place to Put a Piano
When it comes to finding the perfect spot for your piano in a room, creating a great room flow is key. Whether your piano is in a family room, formal living room, dining room, or spare room, there are some things to keep in mind. So, where is the perfect place to put a piano?Â
A piano can be a very large piece of furniture but should be highlighted as the luxurious musical instrument that it is. Well, picture this: imagine your piano against a focal wall, becoming the star of the show and catching everyone’s eye!
To keep things flowing smoothly, consider tucking your piano into a cozy corner or alcove. It’s a clever move that opens up the room and keeps people moving around comfortably. Position your piano slightly off-center from the main seating area to keep things harmonious. That way, it won’t steal the spotlight from the rest of your fabulous furniture.
Additionally, it is a good idea to keep your piano safe from those sneaky sun rays away from direct sunlight. Sunlight can cause fading, warping, and even damage the delicate finish of your instrument. So, try to position your piano in a shady corner of the room. If the piano placement happens to fall by large windows, use curtains, blinds, or shades to block out the harsh rays.
Lighting
Let’s shed some light on finding the perfect lighting options for your piano. It’s all about striking the right balance between practicality and creating a delightful atmosphere.
First things first, you need lighting that helps you read sheet music and play with precision. Look for adjustable task lighting like a stylish piano lamp or some nifty LED strip lights. These can be positioned to light up your sheet music and keys without pesky shadows getting in the way. For a cozy and inviting feel, go for warm and soft lighting that matches your room’s vibe.
Remember, try to avoid placing lights directly above the piano to dodge any irritating glare.
A wall sconce nearby is a great way to add ambient lighting and create a cozy vibe.
If you’re feeling fancy, consider dimmable lights or a separate switch to control the brightness and set the mood just right. With the perfect lighting for your piano, you’ll not only enjoy playing but also create a beautiful space that inspires your musical journey. Let the light shine on your tunes!
Decorating with Decor
Time to add your decorating personality to your piano. These ideas will work for pianos but will also work for any space in your home where music is made and loved!
Wall Art
Hang a large piece of art that complements your piano’s aesthetic. It could be a painting, a musical-themed print, or even a vinyl record display.
Gallery Wall
Create a gallery wall with a mix of framed artwork, musical notes, and inspirational quotes. Arrange them in a visually pleasing way to showcase your love for music.
Musical Instruments
Showcase other elegant instruments like a guitar, violin, or saxophone on stands or wall mounts. They add a dynamic touch and highlight your passion for music.
Flowers and Plants
Place potted plants (fake plants will work!), fresh flowers, or faux stems near the piano to bring in natural beauty and a touch of greenery. And if you don’t have a green thumb, opt for low-maintenance options like succulents or ferns.
Photographs
I love to put family photographs front and center on top of the piano! Display framed photographs of memorable musical performances, favorite musicians, or even snapshots of family and friends enjoying music together. It adds a personal touch and sparks joyful memories.
Candle Holders
Add some ambiance with decorative candle holders or votives placed strategically around the piano. The gentle glow of candlelight creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
Mirror
Hang a stylish mirror above the piano to reflect light and create an illusion of space. It can also add a touch of elegance and make the area feel more expansive.
Home Decor
Incorporate decorative accents like unique vases, pots, and sculptures that align with your style and musical theme. Choose pieces that speak to your personality and enhance the overall aesthetic.Â
Bright Colors
Gather and display brightly colored home decor items that tie in with the color scheme inspiration of the room. By reinforcing the color palette of the room, you will be amazed at the cohesiveness of your decor ideas.
That Something Special
If you have a cherished family heirloom or a special item related to music, such as a vintage musical instrument or sheet music, give it a special place near the piano. It adds sentimental value and becomes a great conversation starter!
The Piano Bench
Oh, let’s talk about jazzing up your piano bench in style!
Decorating your piano bench or stool is a wonderful way to add a personal touch and make it a focal point in your space. You’ve got plenty of options to play with!
Start by adding a comfy cushion or small rug or throw in a fabric that matches your room’s color scheme or reflects your personality. Consider patterns, textures, or even a pop of bold color to make a statement. If you’re feeling crafty, you can DIY a cover using your favorite fabric and some basic sewing skills.Â
Don’t forget about pillows! Toss a couple of decorative pillows on your piano bench to provide extra support and a cozy vibe. You can choose patterns, prints, or embroidery that complements the overall aesthetic of the room.Â
And hey, let’s not forget about functionality—consider adding a storage compartment under the bench to keep your sheet music or other piano accessories neatly tucked away.
Piano Decorating Ideas
There are many different types of pianos and they are all special! But different shapes and sizes allow for different ways to decorate. Whether a grand piano, baby grand, upright, or electronic, here are some ideas to try!
Decorating an Upright Piano
Here are some fun ideas to consider when decorating an upright piano.
Start by draping a beautiful scarf or fabric runner over the top of the piano to add a pop of color or pattern. It’s an easy and versatile way to instantly transform the look.
Next, place a collection of decorative items on the piano, such as small plants, framed photos, or even a charming trinket tray. These personal touches add warmth and personality to the space. Â
You can also hang a decorative mirror or a piece of artwork above the piano to elevate the visual appeal. Don’t forget about the walls surrounding the piano—arrange a gallery of musical-themed artwork or display a collection of vintage sheet music.
Decorating a Grand Piano
Decorating a grand piano can turn it into a captivating centerpiece in your space. Here are some delightful ideas to consider.
Start by adding a gorgeous runner or tablecloth that drapes gracefully over the piano. Choose a fabric that complements your room’s color scheme or goes with the season.Â
Next, adorn the top of the piano with an arrangement of fresh flowers or potted plants to bring in natural beauty and a touch of greenery. You can also sprinkle some decorative accents like candles, small sculptures, or family photographs to add a personal touch.Â
Consider adding a decorative lamp that not only provides practical lighting but also adds a touch of elegance.Â
And don’t forget about the space around the piano—hang an eye-catching piece of wall art or create a gallery wall of musical-themed prints to complement the grandeur of the instrument. With these ideas, your grand piano will become a true work of art that steals the spotlight in your home.
Decorating a Keyboard Piano
An electronic piano is a budget-friendly and space-saving way to keep a modern piano in the home. Don’t let the fact that it plugs into the wall keep you from decorating the area around it!Â
Begin by placing a cozy rug or mat beneath the keyboard to define the space and add a touch of comfort.
Add some greenery by placing small potted plants or succulents nearby to bring life and freshness to the area.
Consider hanging a pegboard or corkboard on the wall above the keyboard to display inspirational quotes, notes, or even your favorite musical doodles.
Get creative with colorful washi tapes or decals to add a playful touch to your keyboard stand or the wall behind it.
And how about adding a comfy seat or stool with a fun cushion or vibrant fabric that complements your style? It’ll make your practice sessions even more enjoyable.

Hi Missy, I loved this post and all of your great ideas. The photo of both of your girls is gorgeous. Same with your home. I love seeing how you’ve decorated around your home and especially your piano decorating ideas.
Thank you, Susan! The photograph was one of their senior pictures from years ago. I’ve always loved it and enjoy it above the upright piano!
I so miss having a piano in our home. We both grew up with pianos in our homes…my mother in law played pipe organ at church for over 50 years, his Dad was choir director, kids were in the choir and all played instruments- violin, cello, drums, flute…my sister in law just retired as piano teacher from Washington University and her daughter continues to teach in Chicago. Loved every moment of reading this today!
What a musical family you have! I’m so glad you liked the post! Thank you, Leslie!
Love your ideas Missy, and the way you decorated around your piano in your home. I laughed when you mentioned you did not always enjoy practicing. My best friend growing up had to practice everyday during our play time, and we would make faces at each other while she practiced beside her mother. Then we would giggle, and she would get into trouble. Always the same every day we spent time at her house. I love thinking about those times… hope you have a wonderful weekend.
I love this story! My brother used to go outside and stick his tongue out at me through the window while I practiced! LOL!
