Time for a Makeover

It’s One Room Challenge time!

Honestly, I wasn’t planning to participate this time around. But sometimes a room just tells you (or yells at you)…it’s TIME!

One of the most used rooms in our house is the TV room. As empty nesters, this is the little room that we usually end up in at the end of each day.

It’s where we watch reruns of “The West Wing”, binge Netflix, and (shh!) sometimes eat dinner.

The room is not bad. But it’s not great.

Ok…it’s REALLY not great.

Dark grey walls, dated furniture…

…really bad lighting, and sorely need wall art.

I had started decorating this room…and then stalled.

So, with the motivation of the One Room Challenge, it’s TIME!

What is the One Room Challenge?

The One Room Challenge is a fun event that happens twice a year, where designers, bloggers, and home decor lovers come together to transform a single room in just eight weeks.

It’s a great way to take on a room makeover, sharing the process with others along the way. You’ll see lots of behind-the-scenes updates, get inspired by creative ideas, and pick up helpful tips.

It’s all about making your dream space come to life, and you get to do it alongside a supportive community of fellow DIY enthusiasts!

TV Room Makeover List

Did I mention the TV room feels like a cave?

Yes, the Flintstones would feel very at home here.

The room was not a bad thing when I was in my “grey decorating phase.”

But now we’re headed toward lighter, brighter coziness!

Here are some of the pain points in the room…

The room is dark. This little room sits just off a covered front porch so there is rarely bright natural sunlight. With the current dark grey walls, it feels more like a cave than a haven.

Overhead lighting is a pet peeve of mine. I just don’t like it.

This overhead light is original to the house. And while I like the vintage feel, it is a dust trap and doesn’t do much for the room or its lighting issues. Sorry for the pixelated photo…

Our sofa is a quality, well-made sofa that has really stood the test of time. While I love the upholstery, the cushions have started to sag and it is not as comfortable as it used to be.

I love my big, red leather wingback chair. It is so comfy and cozy on a cold, winter day. But the scale of the chair has always bothered me in this room. It is just too big for the space.

The drapes are dark and boring. ‘Nuff said.

Wall art is so important in a room. And while there are a few pieces in the room that I really like, they seem a little like room “dandruff.” Small, pretty pictures but no real impact.

ORC Vision for TV Room

For my One Room Challenge makeover, my vision is to transform our TV room into a snug, cozy haven with a twist.

Traditionally, snug rooms are known for their dark, moody colors that create an intimate, relaxing atmosphere.

But in my design, I’m blending that comfy, cozy feel with the brightness of a sunroom.

The goal is to capture the best of both worlds—a space that’s warm and inviting, yet light and open. With a mix of bold colors, soft textures, and smart use of natural light, this room will be a bright and snug retreat, perfect for relaxing or spending time with family!

TV Room Makeover Wish List

The changes to the room are cosmetic but will make a huge difference in the space!

  • Paint the walls a light, creamy white color.
  • Paint the French doors black.
  • Give the existing TV console a paint refresh.
  • New overhead light fixture.
  • Frame TV (This is definitely a wish list item. We’ll see if it fits in the budget.)
  • Replace sofa cushions and reupholster a thrifted chair.
  • Install drapes with drama.
  • Hang wall art with bold colors and high impact.

Let the ORC Journey Begin!

If you’re like me, there’s nothing more exciting than a good room makeover.

It’s amazing to watch a space transform from start to finish, and this time, our TV room is the beneficiary!

Over the next eight weeks, I’ll be sharing every step of the process, from paint colors to decor decisions, and all the little challenges that pop up along the way.

I can’t wait to show you the final reveal, and I’m thrilled to have you along for the ride. Let’s dive in and turn this room into a snug, stylish haven together!

Stay tuned—it’s going to be fun!

Cheers!

  1. “The Flintstones would feel right at home” 🤣 I love following the “One Room Challenge” makeovers! Apparently I’m a much better follower than participant 😳 I’ve signed up to do it twice and both times life took over and I couldn’t make it happen. The room still still sits empty (I took everything out to do begin the makeover last spring and there it sits! I’ll just live vicariously through you, watch your great progress and designs and try not to look at my family room sitting there staring at me . . . judging me 🫣. Can’t wait to see the great things you’re going to do with your “cave”

    1. Michelle, you make me laugh! I have had “life takes over” moments too! I’m hoping this isn’t one of them! Maybe at some point we can have some virtual coffee in our newly decorated rooms!
